Technical Oversight of Olympic Hydraulic Infrastructure
Comprehensive consulting services ensured quality control, design monitoring, and construction support for large-scale hydraulic works across key Athens 2004 Olympic Games facilities, contributing to the successful delivery of complex, high-budget projects.
The study concerns the duties of the EYDE/OE 2004 Technical Support Advisor in the EYDE/OE 2004 Olympic Projects. The Technical Consultant’s services related to the studies and construction of the Olympic projects, with a construction budget of more than 500.00 million euros, under the responsibility of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Science of Greece 2004. Specifically, the projects concerned the Canoe-Kayak Rowing Center in Schinia, the Center Sailing in Agios Kosmas, Beach Volley and regeneration of the area in Falirikos Ormos, the Archery center in Elliniko and the construction of Olympic facilities in Goudi. The above study concerned all hydraulic works (sewage drainage, water supply, rainwater drainage, anti-flooding works, etc.).
The object of the study was the monitoring and quality control of hydraulic project studies (which were prepared by the researchers of EYDE/OE 2004), the monitoring of the planning of studies and projects and the control of the hydraulic studies (Final and implementation) of the Olympic Games that are submitted for approval at the Service. Also, the project included the drafting of relevant Control Sheets for the submitted hydraulic studies, the quality control of the materials proposed to be used by the Construction Contractor, the costing of the new works and materials, autopsies in order to resolve issues related to the construction of the respective projects, and finally monitoring and quality control of projects and providing support during construction supervision.
ESCHATIA
A hydraulic redevelopment project ensuring full flood protection for the Eschatia basin while enhancing safety and quality of life.
Integrated Flood Protection & Urban Upgrade of Eschatia Stream
The scope of the project concerns the settlement projects of the upstream part of Eschatia, from the confluence of the Eupyridon pipeline to Parnithos Avenue with the aim of anti-flood protection in the area. The downstream part of the Eschatia river, from the estuary at Kifissos to the confluence of the Eupyridon pipeline, has been constructed. The proposed settlement projects of the upstream part of Eschatia include:
- Settlement projects of the Eschatia stream, from the junction of the Eupyridon pipeline, where the adjustment will be made to the already constructed section, to Parnithos Avenue, 4,830 m long, with configuration closed rectangular cross-section, using shaft piles or micropiles in sections, where it has been deemed necessary due to the proximity to existing structures,
- Arrangement projects of the contributing Picrodafneza stream, 1,500 m long.
- Arrangement projects of the contributing Agios Georgios stream, 170 m long.
- Redevelopment projects above the closed bed of the Eschatia stream.
With the implementation of the proposed project, the anti-flood protection of the entire catchment area of the Eschatia stream will be completed as the project is in full harmony with the existing projects of the downstream section (from the confluence of the Eupyridon pipeline to the estuary in the Kifissos river).
In summary, with the implementation of the project, the benefits that will arise are the following:

- Protection of public and private property by preventing flood-related damage to homes, businesses, infrastructure, and utilities.
- Enhancing quality of life and strengthening residents’ sense of safety through improved protection from natural hazards and urban redevelopment.
- The upgrading of the commercial value (surplus value) of land-properties that are currently located within zones with a high degree of flood risk
- Reducing public costs by preventing flood damage and minimizing the need for emergency response and compensation efforts.
- The protection of the National Cultural Heritage with the anti-flood shielding of the sites of archaeological interest.
